June 21: Soul & Cinema - Mexican Culture Seen Through
Its Films Introduction, screening, and Discussion
with Joseph Dispenza. Qué Viva Mexico!
(1931), 85 minutes. A foreigner's vision of an exotic culture. Made
by Sergei Eisenstein, the legendary Russian director of Potemkin
and Strike , this film created the visual vocabulary
for virtually all films that were to follow in Mexico. With sequences
devoted to the Eden-like land of Tehuantepec, the savage majesty
of the bullfight, the struggles of the noble peasant and the hypnotic
imagery of the Day of the Dead, Qué Viva México!
is a vivid tapestry of Mexican life which, thanks to a careful
1979 restoration, takes its rightful place alongside Eisenstein's
other masterpieces. 7:30 pm, $50 pesos.
June 22: ' Traslaciones' of the Female
Body - The Child, the Virgin, the Lover, the Mother, the Saint
Talk by Ana Luisa Martinez. (Men welcome.) Traslaciones
refers to a fascinating and problematic capacity of women, like
the planets, to make "movements in relation to themselves and
other space bodies." Women are able knowingly or unknowingly
to shift their body shapes and personalities between a variety of
archetypal forms (child, virgin, lover, mother, saint). Ana Luisa
Martinez was trained in Gestalt Psychotherapy and Polarity Therapy.
She has presented Traslaciones at numerous conferences
and workshops throughout Mexico. She has published an article on
it in the Journal of the Psychology Department of the University
of Veracruz , and she has a book in process. 4-5:30 pm, $50
pesos.
June 22: Embodying and Regulating the Effort in Your Life
Introductory Talk with Richard Adelman. We will reflect on
and deepen our experience of the nature of effort as a felt subjective
bodily experience. How do you effort? Do you over-effort or under-effort?
Are your efforts satisfying or exhausting? Very gentle sitting somatic
exercises from Stanley Keleman's Formative Psychology and the Feldenkrais
Method will initiate you into your own efforting process and introduce
you to tools with which to influence this important aspect of your
life. 7-8:30 pm, $50 pesos.
June 23 & 24: ' Traslaciones'
of the Female Body - The Child, the Virgin, the Lover, the Mother,
the Saint Workshop with Ana Luisa Martinez. (Women
only.) Women pass through biologically-programmed stages of their
existence: menstruation, first sexual intercourse, maternity, and
menopause. These somatic experiences give distinctive shapes to
their bodies. Increasing your conscious participation in this process
will help you to enlarge your capacities, expand your attitudinal
repertoire, and achieve greater freedom and authenticity in your
development as a competent and fulfilled person in the world. 10
am-5 pm, $150 US.
June 23 & 24: Embodying and Regulating the Effort in Your
Life Workshop with Richard Adelman. Effort is a mystery
and a paradox. Although absolutely necessary to our lives, it is
largely unfelt as an actual experience. We may suspect that life-long
habits of over-efforting or over-intensity may be causing us pain
and distress. Or perhaps we intuit that learning to reduce effort
could enable us to become a more graceful person. In this workshop
very slow, gentle sitting and floor work somatic embodiment exercises
and movements will introduce you to your own personal efforting
style. 10 am-5 pm, $150 US.
June 25-29: Private Sessions with Richard Adelman
Fully-clothed hands-on bodywork and movement lessons (tape-recorded
for home use) combine Formative Psychology, Feldenkrais, Pilates,
and Osteopathy to alleviate musculoskeletal pain and discomfort,
improve balance, posture, and co-ordination and to deepen the life
of the body. A special theme for this week's sessions will be the
role of effort in your life. 10 am-8 pm, $65 US/$715 pesos.
June 29, 30, & July 1: Ascension Meditation.
Join the Ishaya Monks for the extraordinary practice of Ascension
Meditation. $2000 pesos, Friday 4-8 pm/Saturday and Sunday 10 am-6
pm. For information and to register, 154.5515 or email: nataraj@ishaya.org.
